The Varia at the time were relatively unknown, but it didn't take long for the squad to steadily rise into infamy as some of the best assassins the world had to offer. They continued to be the best even after Ricardo had passed the family to Terzo. The Ninth Generation of the Varia, aptly considered the strongest of all the Varia generation because of its leaders resemblance to Ricardo, followed Tsunayoshi from the original Vongola to the Neo Vongola. The Ninth generation of Varia continued until the death of Terzo and through the schism of the Vongola itself. Xanxus, the captain of the Varia at the time, had always said he would one day be boss of the Vongola would not have it as it was - weak. When he tried to aid in repairing it by suggesting a Ring Battle, neither side would take the bait especially since the chances of them dying were high. Their refusal and cowardice in the light of an issue such as this led Xanxus to take the Vongola Rings Secondo had entrusted him and casually inform the successors that they could not have the rings unless they could prove they were worthy. When Xanxus retired, his successor was not his son, but his grandson who he adopted as his own when his son turned out to be "useless trash." Currently, the rings are in the possession of the tenth generation of Varia. [/style]

The Varia first came into being during Vongola Secondo's reign and functions as the Vongola's elite assassination squad. They've gone through many captains over the generation. Only those dubbed 'assassination geniuses' - or madmen, depending on how the fine line separating the two is seen - are admitted into the Varia.

One condition upon joining the Varia is the knowledge of at least seven different languages; however, this is usually overlooked for raw ability and skill. As far as their current captain is concerned, he prefers finding potential rather than the best because he can make them the best.

Despite their general lack of caring for anyone outside the Varia, the Varia within are usually very tight nit and their loyalty is first to their Captain rather than the Vongola family in which they follow.

» The Varia have remained neutral through the conflict between the Giorno and the Notte Vongolas, so they should not show any preferences towards one family; even if they do prefer one over the other.
